Providence is calling a Registered Respiratory Therapist ( Respiratory Therapy , Variable Shift, 0.6 FTE, 24 hours per week) to Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chewelah, Washington. In this position you will:
Perform CPR in a competent manner.
Accurately and safely demonstrate the ability to:
Manually ventilate a patient with sufficient hand strength to create a face "seal".
Ability to manually ventilate an intubated patient for long periods of time; 2 hours with an ambu or anesthesia bag.
Assist in transporting an intubated patient to various areas while maintaining ventilation.
Manually ventilate during conscious sedation procedures such as cardioversions and dislocation reductions.
Apply chest compressions during CPR.
Set up ventilators for intubated patients:
Accurately and safely demonstrate the ability to set up ventilators for intubated patients including infants requiring mechanical ventilation.
Able to maneuver ventilator equipment.
Assisting with and occasionally performing intubations.
Monitoring patient statistics and understanding ventilator setting adjustments based on patient status.
Determine initial ventilator settings pending physician orders using independent judgment.
Administer medications and therapy via established protocol.
Accurately and safely demonstrate the ability to use independent judgment to determine appropriate medication within the scope of the aerosol patient driven protocol and continuous nebulization via the following modalities:
Hand Held Nebulizer
Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing
Endotracheal Tube or Tracheostomy
Ventilator or noninvasive ventilator circuit
Filtered nebulizer systems
Metered Dose Inhaler
Accurately assess each assigned patient’s condition, charts and documents findings and responses to treatments. Report significant findings to the appropriate RN or team member immediately.
Ability to observe interpret, record, and report appropriate signs, symptoms, reaction, or changes in patient’s condition to appropriate team members.
Document accurately, promptly, and appropriately according the hospital policy, patient condition, treatment initiated and results.
Perform duties related to Respiratory Therapy treatments:
Accurately and safely perform:
Chest physiotherapy which involves adjusting patients to auscultate as well as positioning them for effective therapy.
Provide expertise in determining or recommending proper oxygen amounts for O2 delivery devices for patients, based on patient assessment and interview. Work with discharge planner and care coordinator to determine the patient's oxygen needs for home. Provide oxygen titration and saturation checks to inpatients on oxygen, following the O2 patient-driven protocol. Assist also in other home care respiratory equipment recommendations, involved in measuring oxygen saturations via oximetry at rest and with activity.
Set up for assist with therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopies (scheduled and emergent). Involve transporting a cart to designated area and assisting with the procedure.
Collecting and processing various specimens▪ Setting up the cart▪ Cleaning and checking scope and restocking cart.
Set up and maintain operation of croup tents, oxyhoods and other humidity systems.
Collect blood specimens, runs samples in the blood gas analyzer & makes recommendations based upon results. Perform quality assurance on blood gas analyzers.
Be able to perform simple bedside spirometry such as peak flows and forced vital capacity.
Clinical teaching to patients or patient's family or other caregivers positive health measures such as pre-operative cardiac instruction, asthma and COPD education; breathing and coughing techniques to improve ventilatory status; assist in smoking intervention techniques; assist pediatric nurses in teaching infant CPR to parents of high risk infants.
Initiate non-invasive ventilation involving: early intervention and initiation by therapists by recognizing patients who could benefit by using BIPAP; understanding criteria for contraindications for therapy; set up and operating non-invasive ventilators; work closely with patients to alleviate apprehension and correctly fit the type of mask suited to the patient's condition; use independent judgment to determine proper settings and evaluate effectiveness using O2 saturations, ABG results and overall patient response; monitors settings closely.
Perform overall assessment of patient's respiratory status when requested by physicians and nursing staff. Make recommendations for therapy based on patient history, vital signs, breath sounds, spirometry and patient interviews.
Perform airway management: trach care; stoma care; endotracheal tube care; naso airways.
Perform tacheostomy tube removal and reinsertion for trach changes; provide expertise on when to downsize trachs and how to plug trachs; make recommendations when the patient appears to be physiologically and psychologically prepared to make these changes; assist speech and swallowing technologists in determining the patient is ready to eat and speak.
Suctioning patients via artificial airways and nasotracheal suctioning.
Insert naso airways.
Perform simple and complex sputum inductions and know methods for obtaining optimal results.
Required qualifications for this position include:
Graduate of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Therapist
Must be certified or registered through the National Board of Respiratory Care and possess a license to practice respiratory care through the Washington State Department of Licensing
