Providence is calling a Child Life Specialist (Family Support Services, Variable Shift, 0.0 FTE) to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. The requirements for this position include:
Assess and share the physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural and safety dimensions of the patient/family
Perform an initial assessment of the patient, including physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural and safety dimensions as related to patients' potential to participate in Child Life program
Perform ongoing assessment for patient's ability to participate in the Child Life program activities.
Assess the family's need for emotional support
Collect subjective and objective data from patients, families and other staff members to formulate the patient’s / families needs in relation to the Child Life program
Identify needs and makes referrals to available resource people (including community resources, epidemiologist, Chaplaincy, Social Services, etc.)
Report pertinent information to the primary care nurse or to the appropriate staff members as needs are assessed
Create and maintains a safe environment for the patient through appropriate intervention as determined by the patient's status
Utilize principles of infection control and follows isolation procedures
Provide care according to established competencies, ethical dimensions of practice and procedures; demonstrates working knowledge of equipment necessary in providing care
Carry out patient/family requests or explains if the request is contrary to PSHMC policy or the medical/nursing plan of care
Coordinate and implements patient education program appropriate for the patient and based on the patient and/or family's ability, willingness and readiness to learn
Maintain a basic knowledge of treatments and procedures children may experience while hospitalized
Procure and maintains necessary program supplies according to established budgetary objectives
Coordinate with Chaplaincy Department and provides patient/family emotional and spiritual support during phases of critical illness, and/or death, dying, bereavement
Coordinate and maintains a bereavement follow-up program including follow-up letters or calls, provision of written materials and an initiation of referral to community support services as appropriate
Schedule and conducts pediatric pre-surgical and community tours
Perform ongoing evaluation of patient's condition and response to the therapeutic interventions, modifying plan and taking action as indicated
Evaluate the patient's response to teaching provided and documents on appropriate forms
Required qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor's Degree in Child development, Recreational therapy, or Elementary education or equivalent educ/experience
Child Life Certification from the Association of Child Life Professionals (ALCP) required, or eligible for Child Life Certification within 1 year of hire
