Providence Health & Services Maternity Technician in Spokane, Washington


Providence is calling a Maternity Technician (Labor and Delivery, Variable, 0.0 FTE, On-call/Supplemental) to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Customer Service: Maintain and promote positive, open and honest interpersonal relationships with customers (physicians, employees, visitors, patients, and other PSHMC publics). Provide high quality service to all customers; focus on understanding customers’ needs and follows through.   • Assist the Registered Nurse in providing identified direct / indirect patient care needs, including but not limited to:

  • Surgical Responsibilities:

  • Use knowledge of patient anatomy and the surgical procedure.

  • Acquire appropriate instrumentation for any given case considering patient’s anatomy, age and size

  • Correctly set up the surgical obstetrical suite, creating a sterile environment

  • Perform the duties of a sterile member of the operating team for scheduled and emergency cesarean sections, tubal ligations and other OB procedures

  • Follow procedures used by PSHMC for verifying and labeling all medications used on the sterile field

  • Assist with identification and handling of surgical specimens

  • Correctly clean the operating suite in a manner to assure prevention of infection to patients and to obstetrical staff. Evaluates the supplies, equipment, instruments and sutures that will be needed for subsequent cases

  • Wrap and sterilize specific delivery room equipment according to procedure

  • Assess daily, the wrapped sterile equipment for dating and re-sterilization as indicated

  • Monitor and record autoclave function weekly

  • Quarterly clean autoclave (in conjunction with housekeeping) weekly

  • Participate in quality assurance as related to obstetrical surgical cases as assigned

  • Direct and indirect patient care responsibilities:

  • Accurately completes delegated portions of the admission assessment and procedures.

  • Report observable significant findings/changes of patient condition to RN.

  • Work cooperatively with available resource people (anesthetists, nursing staff, medical staff, etc.).

  • Organize and establish priorities to perform assigned work in a timely and orderly manner.

  • Consistently use equipment and supplies according to manufacturers instructions.

  • Provide direct/indirect patient care according to established competencies, ethical dimensions of practice, policies, procedures and demonstrates working knowledge of equipment used in performing assigned duties (i.e., admission/discharge and/or assist set-up for delivery).

  • Create a safe environment for the patient through appropriate intervention as determined by the patient's status.

  • Explain preparation for procedures to patient/family prior to implementation or administration as appropriate.

  • Carry out patient and family requests upon consultation and direction of the Registered Nurse.

  • Assist in providing psychosocial, spiritual and cultural support for patients/families as defined by the plan of care.

  • Unit clerical responsibilities:

  • Accurately perform daily inventory of stock; orders supplies as necessary.

  • Accurately record weekly temperature check of autoclave and refrigerator.

  • Accurately stock delivery room carts, stabilities, monitors, patient rooms with supplies, equipment and linens in a timely manner.

  • Accurately stock delivery/birthing rooms in a timely manner.

  • Assist in stripping rooms after discharge/procedures.

  • Assist in cleaning delivery carts, stabilities, consistently utilizing BSI techniques.

  • Perform unit errands when assigned (i.e., specimens to lab/pathology, pass and pick-up trays).

  • Accurately files lab reports and patient reports in charts.

  • Clean refrigerators, coffee machines, med rooms, monitors and conference room weekly and as necessary.

  • Assist HUC functions as needed and as directed.

  • Complete admit/discharge log and delivery log correctly.

  • Staple and make charts.

  • Complete diet and census sheets correctly.

  • Exhibit behaviors that enhance teamwork in providing patient care and accomplishing unit goals and objectives.

  • Plan and organize work to accomplish patient care goals and unit objectives.

  • Inform the RN when difficult problems, unusual developments or activities occur that effect the RN's responsibilities.

  • Participate in the problem-solving process in the development and implementation of unit goals and objectives.

  • Recognize own limitations and seeks assistance from the RN when needed.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Graduate of a course in surgical technology or Current experience working as a surgical technologist

  • Current registration as Surgical Technologist in the State of Washington

  • Acceptable references from former employer(s)
