Providence Staff Pharmacist in Spokane, Washington

Description:

Providence is calling a Staff Pharmacist (Outpatient Pharmacy, Variable, 0.5 FTE) Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children's Hospital in Spokane, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Customer Service: Maintain and promote positive, open and honest interpersonal relationships with customers (physicians, employees, visitors, patients, and other PSHMC publics). Provides high quality service to all customers; focuses on understanding customers’ needs and follows through. Demonstrate respect for the capabilities, different cultures and or personalities of co-workers and Medical Center publics within the mission/values of PSHMC.

  • Communication: Promote and demonstrate effective, open and honest written and verbal communication skills.

  • Self-Management: Demonstrate self-management behaviors which reflect a positive image of PSHMC, following established policies and procedures and promote an efficient, cost effective work environment.

  • Ownership /Stewardship and Accountability: Demonstrate good stewardship of resources by treating property of customers, Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and co-workers with care and respect.

  • Teamwork: Work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of staff and other disciplines for problem solving without blaming.

  • Flexibility: Demonstrate flexibility by readily adapting to different situations to complete work.

  • Perform pharmaceutical care programs which include assessment, monitoring and outcomes related to patient drug therapy per department policies and procedures.

  • Assessment: Assess and document pharmacotherapy of the patient.

  • Monitoring: Promote and monitor the medical/pharmacy therapeutic plan that will produce specific therapeutic outcomes for the patient.

  • Outcomes: Evaluate and document outcomes of drug therapy.

  • Drug Distribution:

  • Monitor all elements of daily dispensing, inventory, housekeeping and security according to all regulatory agencies and department policies and procedures to ensure quality of services.

  • Initiate service promptly upon receipt of an order, follows procedures and makes recommendations to physicians in an organized, professional manner.

  • Demonstrate good judgment in the ability to organize the work flow utilizing supportive personnel to maximum efficiency, freeing up time (for the pharmacist) to perform more selective and priority duties.

  • Plan work to compensate for unanticipated changes in volume, assignment, emergencies and staffing/scheduling changes.

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of technicians for accuracy, neatness and compliance with procedures prior to dispensing; communicates filling problems/errors to technician responsible.

  • Assist technician with problems relating to compounding, dispensing or data entry.

  • Maintain departmental security and controls distribution of all drugs according to established procedures.

  • Utilize drugs and supplies in a cost-effective manner.

  • Maintain appropriate stock levels and information as deemed necessary by pharmacy director, nursing clinical managers and regulatory agencies.

  • Demonstrate appropriate aseptic technique in the preparation of sterile products.

  • Demonstrate ability to appropriately use the TPN compounder and computer.

  • Demonstrate appropriate technique in the preparation of chemotherapeutic agents.

  • Demonstrate appropriate use of horizontal flow hood.

  • Know, understand and follow hospital and department goals and objectives, and policies and procedures.

  • Education:

  • Consistently coordinate and/or implements patient education program appropriate for the patient and based on the patient's and/or family's age, ability, willingness and readiness to learn.

  • Provide drug education to physicians, nurses, pharmacy students, other hospital staff and patients to enhance drug information and promote rational drug therapy.

  • Research drug information questions, evaluates the literature, formulates and presents relevant and organized information verbally or in writing within the established time frame.

  • Provide teaching consults to patients and families in a clear, concise and easily understood manner. Adapts communication style and teaching method to age of patient/family member.

  • Serve as preceptor for pharmacy students as requested.

  • Provide staff development presentation(s) to pharmacists based on established presentation schedule. Pharmacists providing exclusive night shift coverage are excluded from this expectation.

  • Conduct lectures and inservices for physicians and other hospital personnel as requested in an organized manner to meet the needs of the audience.

  • Leadership & Supervision:

  • Perform leadership functions to guide, direct, supervise and coordinate staff to efficiently achieve and maintain an orderly pharmacy unit (satellite/station).

  • Demonstrate responsiveness to co-workers by listening, providing support, or referring to appropriate resource as indicated (i.e., pharmacy management) to provide a positive work environment.

  • Provide constructive feedback to team members concerning appropriate and inappropriate pharmacy interventions and behaviors.

  • Assist in the orientation and development of new staff in cooperation with the staff development coordinator or supervisor.

  • Consistently inform immediate supervisor in a timely manner when difficult problems, unusual developments or activities occur.

  • Consistently recognize own limitations and seeks help from appropriate sources when needed.

  • Consistently participate in formulary development and implementation.

  • Consistently participate in the development and implementation of pharmacy goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy or Ph.D. in Pharmacy

  • Licensed or eligible for license as a Registered Pharmacist in good standing by the State of Washington.

  • Acceptable references from former employer(s).

  • Preference for individuals with professional affiliations.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Training in the concepts of pharmaceutical care.

  • 1 year hospital setting or residency.

  • Previous experience in a decentralized pharmacy setting.

  • Professional affiliations.
